Does your Organization need a Split Domain?

Defining a Split Domain

A Split Domain makes it possible to receive your mail in two locations. When a Split Domain is enabled the Exchange server will use the MX record for your domain to determine where to send mail for email addresses which do not have a valid mailbox on the Exchange server.

Why is a Split Domain useful?

A Split Domain proves useful when organizations:

1. Only have some users who require the need for a hosted Exchange mailbox, while POP email sufices for the other users.
2. Plan to migrate users to a hosted Exchange staggered over time - this is known as a 'slow migration'.

When would you need a Split Domain?

You will need a split domain in either of the two scenarios above. When the domain has been split between the two servers types, emails sent to users of the same domain, yet outside of the Exchange environment (i.e. POP) will bounce.

This occurs because The Exchange Server will only look within the Exchange Server for resolution. Not recognizing the email address, it rejects it. Enabling the Split Domain creates a connector. The Exchange Server will then access the MX record for your domain and determine where to send emails for addresses without a valid mailbox on the Exchange server.

Please contact Support with the following information to have a Split Domain enabled. There is a one-time setup fee for the manual setup.

1. Company name
2. Domain name
